Colocynth (Latin: Citrullus colocynthis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. Often referred to as the desert watermelon or bitter apple, it is a wild relative of the common watermelon. Unlike its edible counterpart, the colocynth fruit is known for its intense bitterness and toxicity, containing active substances that are processed for specific industrial and medical needs.

The plant originates from the arid regions of North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of the Mediterranean. It is perfectly adapted to desert and semi-desert environments, thriving where rainfall is scarce and temperatures are extremely high. Its survival strategy makes it a subject of interest for agricultural research into drought-resistant plant breeding.

Botanically, the plant develops long, trailing vines that can extend for several meters along the ground. Its leaves are deeply lobed and greyish-green. The fruit is a spherical berry with a hard, smooth rind, which transitions from green to a yellow, mottled appearance as it matures. The interior is filled with a dry, spongy, bitter pulp containing numerous seeds.

The cultivation requirements are focused on providing a high amount of solar radiation and well-drained, sandy soils. Colocynth has a low tolerance for waterlogged conditions, which can lead to rapid fungal decay. Agronomic management involves maintaining soil aeration and ensuring that the plant receives enough heat during its growth cycle to properly develop its seeds, which are the main commercial output of the crop.

Colocynth is primarily valued for its seeds, which are rich in fats and proteins, and its pharmaceutical applications. The pulp is used in traditional medicine as a potent laxative and purgative, although its strong biological activity necessitates careful handling.
