The clammy locust (Robinia viscosa Vent.) is a deciduous tree or large shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is distinct among the Robinia genus due to the glandular hairs present on its young stems and flower stalks, which secrete a sticky, viscous substance giving the plant its common name.

Native to the southeastern United States, particularly within the Appalachian mountain regions, this species has been cultivated in gardens and parks for centuries. It is widely valued in horticulture for its ornamental properties, specifically its striking pink to rose-purple flowers that appear in showy, pendulous clusters during the late spring and early summer.

Botanically, the clammy locust typically grows to a height of 8 to 12 meters. Its foliage consists of pinnately compound leaves, and its inflorescences are distinct from the white-flowering black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). The tree exhibits a spreading habit and provides a lush, verdant canopy that adds texture to any landscape design.

Cultivation requirements involve providing the tree with full sun exposure and well-drained, fertile soil. While it is somewhat adaptable to various soil types, it performs best in loam. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established but requires protection from severe winds to prevent branch breakage. Propagation is typically achieved through root suckers or grafting onto other Robinia rootstocks.

The primary use of the clammy locust is ornamental landscape architecture. It is an excellent choice for specimen planting, street beautification, and screening. Furthermore, as a nitrogen-fixing legume, it serves an important role in soil improvement and is considered a beneficial species for attracting pollinators, including bees, to the garden environment.
