The Clerodendrum splendens, commonly known as the bleeding heart vine, is a perennial evergreen climber belonging to the family Lamiaceae. Renowned for its vibrant scarlet inflorescences and deep green, lustrous foliage, it is widely utilized in tropical landscapes and indoor greenhouse production as a premium ornamental crop.

Originating from the tropical regions of West Africa, this plant has adapted to thrive in high-humidity environments. In commercial and private horticulture, it is cultivated globally where climate conditions permit or within controlled environments like conservatories. It requires specialized management to mimic its natural equatorial habitat.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its vining habit, requiring trellising for optimal growth and display. The leaves are opposite, glossy, and possess a distinct veined texture. The plant produces spectacular clusters of bright red flowers that appear throughout the warmer months, provided the plant receives sufficient solar radiation and balanced nutrition.

Successful cultivation depends on high-quality, well-draining substrates rich in organic matter. The species thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and is highly sensitive to cold drafts. Consistent moisture is essential during the growing season; however, excessive water retention in the root zone can lead to rot, necessitating a carefully managed irrigation system and robust drainage.

Common pests include spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects, especially in dry greenhouse conditions. Integrated pest management, focusing on maintaining optimal humidity levels and regular monitoring, is crucial for plant health.
