Cochemiea cerralboa is a rare succulent plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. Previously classified under the genus Mammillaria, this species has been reclassified to the genus Cochemiea based on recent molecular phylogenetic analysis. It is highly sought after by cactus enthusiasts and botanical collectors for its specific morphology and rarity.

The origin of this species is strictly limited to Cerralvo Island in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Due to this narrow endemic distribution, the plant is adapted to unique arid conditions on rocky slopes. Cultivating it outside its native environment requires strict replication of these conditions to ensure the plant's long-term health and growth within greenhouse or indoor collections.

Botanically, it presents a cylindrical stem structure, which may branch from the base as the specimen matures. The stem is covered in well-defined tubercles carrying sharp spines. The species is noted for its ability to produce attractive blooms that typically emerge from the upper parts of the stem. Maintaining the proper moisture levels for the roots is the most challenging aspect of its botanical maintenance.

Requirements for successful cultivation are specialized. The substrate must be inorganic and extremely porous, typically consisting of crushed volcanic rock, coarse sand, and minimal organic matter. During the active growing season, high levels of light are required, although protection from direct, scorching mid-day sunlight is necessary for specimens grown in containers or glasshouses. Excessive humidity must be strictly avoided to prevent rot.

Its primary use is in ornamental horticulture and botanical conservation. Major challenges in management include preventing fungal root infections caused by overwatering. Common pests include mealybugs and spider mites, which can thrive in dry conditions if the plant is stressed. Maintaining a clear seasonal cycle, with a cool and dry dormancy period, is essential to mimic its natural biological rhythm and encourage flowering.
