Cretan colchicum (lat. Colchicum cretense) is a perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Colchicaceae family. It is an endemic species native to the island of Crete, naturally occurring in rocky habitats and Mediterranean mountain slopes, where it has adapted to significant seasonal variations in soil moisture and temperature.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a firm corm covered with dark, tunicated scales. It exhibits a distinct phenological cycle: the foliage emerges in early spring and withers before summer, while the flowers appear in autumn, often without leaves. The blossoms are typically delicate white or pale pink, making the plant a prized addition to specialized collections.

Agrotechnical requirements for Colchicum cretense emphasize the need for excellent soil drainage. It thrives in gritty, alkaline, or neutral substrates that mimic its natural rocky environment. Proper moisture management is essential: the soil should remain moderately moist during the spring growth phase but must be kept dry during the summer and winter dormancy to prevent corm rot.

In terms of economic and practical use, the plant is primarily cultivated as an ornamental bulb for rock gardens and rockeries. Due to its chemical composition, which includes the alkaloid colchicine, it also holds interest for pharmaceutical research and genetic studies.
