Kurdish colchicum

Kurdish colchicum (Colchicum kurdicum) is a perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Colchicaceae family. It is distinctively known for its unique life cycle, where flowering occurs during the autumn months, while foliage development and fruit ripening take place in the following spring, leaving the bulb dormant during the heat of summer.

The native range of this species encompasses the mountainous regions of the Middle East, particularly within Kurdistan, Turkey, and adjacent areas. It is biologically adapted to rocky terrain and alpine meadows, flourishing in environments that provide excellent soil drainage and exposure to fluctuating seasonal temperatures typical of high-altitude landscapes.

Botanically, the plant consists of a corm that stores nutrients to support its rapid autumn flowering phase. The flowers are generally funnel-shaped, displaying colors from pale pink to intense purple. Following the autumn bloom, the plant remains dormant underground until spring, when narrow, lanceolate leaves emerge along with the seed capsule, eventually withering away as summer approaches.

Regarding cultivation, the Kurdish colchicum requires well-drained, fertile soil and a site that receives plenty of sunlight. It is essential to ensure that the site does not remain waterlogged during the summer months, as this can lead to corm rot. Planting is recommended during late summer to allow the bulb to establish before the flowering season begins.
