Confetti bush

The Confetti bush (Coleonema pulchrum) is an evergreen ornamental shrub belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is highly valued for its dense, fine-textured foliage and its ability to cover itself in small, star-shaped pink flowers during the spring and summer months.

Native to the Western Cape of South Africa, the plant thrives in Mediterranean-style climates. It is adapted to sandy, well-drained soils found in its natural habitat, making it an excellent candidate for xeriscaping or gardens in coastal regions where soil quality might be poor but drainage is excellent.

Botanically, it features aromatic, needle-like leaves that release a pleasant scent when brushed against. The growth habit is typically bushy and rounded, reaching up to 1-1.5 meters in height. Its resilience makes it a favored plant for hedges and formal garden borders in regions where it does not experience hard frost.

Regarding agrotechnical requirements, the plant demands full sun exposure and slightly acidic, well-aerated soil. It is drought-tolerant once established but requires consistent care during the initial growing season. Periodic pruning is essential to keep the shrub compact and to prevent it from becoming woody or leggy over time.

The primary use of the Confetti bush is in landscaping and urban beautification. It is often used in mixed shrub borders or as a container plant. Common issues include root rot caused by stagnant water in heavy, clay-rich soils. Pests such as aphids or spider mites can occur, but these are generally manageable with standard integrated pest management practices.
