This species is highly valued in horticulture as a decorative indoor plant. Because of its epiphytic nature, it does not grow well in standard heavy garden soil. Instead, it thrives in environments that mimic its natural habitat, such as hanging baskets or greenhouses with excellent drainage and high atmospheric moisture, which are critical for its healthy development.

Botanically, Columnea hirta is characterized by its stems and leaves covered in fine, hair-like structures, which give the plant a fuzzy texture. The foliage is typically lush and green, sometimes tinged with red, while the flowers are tubular and vivid, often in shades of orange or red. These flowers are evolutionary adaptations designed to be pollinated by hummingbirds in the wild.

Cultivation requires specific attention to the growing medium, which should be airy and rich in organic matter, such as a mix of peat, bark, and perlite. The plant needs bright, indirect light to bloom successfully. Maintaining a consistent temperature and high humidity is essential, as the plant is sensitive to dry air, which can cause leaf drop and stunted growth if not managed correctly.
