The natural distribution area of this species covers the eastern part of the African continent, specifically Tanzania and Kenya. In the wild, the tree grows in dry bushlands and on rocky slopes where annual rainfall is extremely limited, making soil drainage a critical factor for the plant's survival.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its distinctive peeling bark, which often displays a yellowish or reddish hue. The branches are frequently armed with thorns, an evolutionary defense mechanism against herbivores. The leaves are odd-pinnate, small in size, and capable of being shed rapidly upon the onset of a pronounced dry season.
For successful cultivation, Commiphora merkeri requires intense solar exposure and well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils with low organic content. The plant is highly sensitive to excessive moisture, which quickly leads to root system rot. The temperature regime must remain consistently warm, with no risk of frost exposure.
