Petunia x hybrida is a widespread ornamental plant species belonging to the Solanaceae family. This hybrid plant was developed through cross-breeding various wild species native to South America. It is widely cultivated globally as an annual ornamental, valued for its remarkable blooming performance and the sheer variety of color forms available to modern gardeners.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by herbaceous stems that can be trailing, mounding, or upright depending on the cultivar. The leaves are simple, entire, and slightly sticky due to the presence of glandular hairs. The flowers, which are the main feature of the crop, are funnel-shaped and can be either single or double, often showcasing intricate patterns and vibrant colors.
The culture thrives in well-lit environments and requires full sun to maintain dense growth and prolific flowering. It prefers moderate temperatures, ideally between 20°C and 25°C, and is sensitive to frost. Proper water management is critical: while petunias appreciate moisture, they are highly susceptible to root rot if the soil remains waterlogged for extended periods.
In terms of agrotechnics, Petunia x hybrida requires fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. To achieve maximum floral display, frequent feeding with liquid fertilizers rich in phosphorus and potassium is essential throughout the growing season. Propagation is typically done via seeds, which are very small and require light and constant humidity to germinate properly.
