It is a root parasite that survives by drawing nutrients and water exclusively from the roots of specific host trees, primarily oaks.

The native range of Conopholis americana extends across eastern North America, spanning from Canada down through the United States. It is typically found in mature deciduous forests, where it forms dense, subterranean connections with the root systems of host trees. The presence of the plant is usually indicated by its growth above ground during the flowering season.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a fleshy, club-shaped stalk covered in overlapping scales, earning it the nickname "squawroot" or "bear corn."
