Grey cottonhead

Grey cottonhead (Conostylis candicans) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Haemodoraceae family. It is widely recognized for its stunning silver-grey foliage, which is covered in fine, hair-like structures designed to reflect heat and minimize transpiration in harsh, arid environments.

Native to the south-western regions of Western Australia, this species naturally thrives in sandy, well-draining soils. Its distribution spans coastal dunes and scrublands, reflecting its strong evolutionary adaptation to Mediterranean climates where summers are prolonged and rain is seasonal.

Botanically, the plant grows in compact, tufted clumps. The foliage remains evergreen, providing color throughout the year, while the yellow, tubular flowers appear atop short stalks during the late winter and spring seasons. These flowers are not only visually appealing but also provide a crucial nectar source for various native insects.

Cultivation requires careful attention to soil composition. It demands excellent drainage to prevent root rot, which is the most common cause of failure in domestic gardens. While it prefers full sun, it is highly tolerant of exposed, windy sites. Growers should avoid high-phosphorus fertilizers, as the plant is adapted to nutrient-poor soils.
