This plant is native to the coastal regions of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. In its natural habitat, Copiapoa cinerea thrives in environments where rainfall is virtually non-existent. These plants rely almost exclusively on the thick, moisture-laden coastal fogs known as "camanchaca" to sustain their slow metabolic processes.
