Hairy bugseed (Corispermum villosum) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. It is recognized in agronomy as a specialized psammophyte—a plant species uniquely adapted to survive in sandy soils and harsh environments where moisture availability is extremely limited and nutrient content is low.

The native range of this species spans the arid steppe and semi-desert zones across Eurasia. Due to its evolutionary adaptation to continental climates, the plant displays remarkable resilience to extreme heat, cold winters, and prolonged drought, making it a valuable asset for land reclamation projects in challenging geographical areas.

Morphologically, Corispermum villosum is characterized by a highly branched stem covered in fine trichomes (hairs), which function to reduce water transpiration and provide protection against intense solar radiation. The plant possesses a deep, penetrating taproot system, allowing it to access moisture reserves deep within sandy substrates that are inaccessible to shallower-rooted grasses.

Agronomically, the crop requires very low inputs. Cultivation is best suited for sandy, loose soils with minimal organic matter. Sowing should occur in early spring to utilize seasonal soil moisture. Because it is highly adapted to nutrient-poor soils, it does not require intensive fertilization or specialized irrigation, significantly reducing the financial costs associated with its establishment.
