Shrubby scorpion-vetch

Shrubby scorpion-vetch (lat. Coronilla valentina) is a perennial evergreen subshrub belonging to the Fabaceae family. Known for its distinct foliage and bright yellow flowers, it acts as a functional plant that enhances soil nitrogen levels through biological nitrogen fixation.

Originating from the Mediterranean region, this plant naturally thrives in rocky habitats, scrublands, and hillsides. It is well-adapted to warm, temperate climates. As a cultivation subject, it requires regions with mild winters, as severe frost can damage its structure, limiting its agricultural range in colder northern latitudes.

Botanically, it forms a compact mound reaching 50–80 cm in height. The foliage is characteristically glaucous-green, which explains its common name. The fragrant, pea-like flowers are arranged in umbels, blooming profusely in spring and early summer, making the plant a notable feature in Mediterranean-style landscapes.

Agrotechnical requirements focus on excellent drainage and full sun exposure. The species is highly drought-tolerant once established but demands well-aerated, stony, or sandy soils to prevent root rot. It performs poorly in dense, heavy, or waterlogged soils, which is the most critical factor for successful plantation management.
