Veitch's witch hazel

Veitch's witch hazel (Corylopsis veitchiana) is a deciduous ornamental shrub belonging to the Hamamelidaceae family. This species is highly valued for its early spring display of pendulous, fragrant, yellow flowers that emerge on bare branches, offering one of the most striking floral shows in the early season.

The plant originates from Central China, where it typically inhabits forest margins and sheltered mountain valleys. Due to this origin, the species prefers temperate climates with moderate humidity and protection from harsh, drying winds. It is generally suitable for hardiness zones that provide mild to moderate winters without extreme frost exposure.

Botanically, this shrub grows to an average height of 2 to 3 meters. The leaves are rounded to ovate, featuring serrated margins that provide a lush green backdrop throughout the summer. The primary aesthetic attraction is the racemes of bright yellow, bell-shaped flowers that appear in early spring before the foliage unfolds.

To ensure healthy growth, Veitch's witch hazel requires a location with partial shade or filtered sunlight. The soil must be rich in organic matter, well-draining, and acidic to neutral in pH. Because the root system is sensitive to waterlogging, amending heavy clay soils with organic material and ensuring proper drainage is essential for long-term survival.

In landscaping, it serves as an excellent specimen plant or part of a mixed shrub border. Maintenance is relatively straightforward: prune only after flowering to maintain shape, and ensure regular watering during prolonged dry spells.
