Corylus maxima, commonly known as the giant filbert or Lombardy hazel, is a productive agricultural crop belonging to the Betulaceae family. It is primarily cultivated for its nuts, which are widely consumed globally. The plant is characterized by its distinct, long husk (involucre) that completely encases the nut, providing protection and a unique aesthetic appearance.

The species is native to Southeastern Europe and Western Asia. It thrives best in regions with maritime or Mediterranean climates, where winters are not excessively harsh. Today, large-scale orchards are found in Turkey, Italy, and increasingly in parts of the United States and other temperate regions where the soil and water conditions are optimal for nut production.

Botanically, it is a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree. The leaves are large, serrated, and sometimes display a deep reddish-purple hue in specific cultivars. Unlike other species, the fruit of the giant filbert is typically more elongated. The root system is shallow, making the plant sensitive to deep cultivation and soil compaction near the base.

Successful production requires deep, fertile, well-drained loamy soils. The crop demands consistent moisture, particularly during the nut-filling stage in summer. Excessive humidity can lead to fungal issues, while drought significantly reduces kernel fill. A balanced fertilization program, focusing on nitrogen during early growth and potash for fruit maturity, is essential.

Orchard management focuses on controlling key pests like the hazelnut weevil and managing diseases such as eastern filbert blight or powdery mildew. Regular pruning is necessary to maintain an open canopy, which promotes sunlight penetration and air circulation, significantly reducing the pressure from fungal pathogens and increasing fruit set.
