Description
Red bloodwood (Corymbia gummifera) is a prominent evergreen tree species belonging to the Myrtaceae family. Previously classified within the Eucalyptus genus, it is now taxonomically placed in the genus Corymbia. This tree is widely recognized for its significant production of red kino, a gummy exudate that exudes from the trunk when the bark is damaged or during physiological stress.
The species is native to the eastern coast of Australia, stretching from Victoria up to southern Queensland. It thrives in various environments, primarily favoring sandy soils and sandstone-derived sites within dry sclerophyll forests. In terms of cultivation, it requires regions with mild climates, avoiding areas prone to severe frosts which can severely damage the canopy and the vascular system of younger specimens.
Botanically, the tree can reach heights of up to 40 meters, showcasing a rugged appearance with rough, tessellated, greyish-brown bark. Its leaves are lanceolate, thick, and leathery, typical of drought-resistant species. The flowers are white to creamy and appear in clusters, serving as a vital forage source for nectar-feeding birds and various insect pollinators, playing a critical role in the local ecosystem.
Cultivation requirements involve selecting sunny locations with excellent drainage. While the species is highly resilient to dry spells once established, early development stages require careful irrigation management. The soil should ideally have an acidic pH. Proper agricultural practice also necessitates spacing trees adequately to ensure good air circulation, which helps prevent humidity-related issues within the dense crown.
