The plant originates from the arid regions of Mexico, where it thrives in rocky terrain with minimal soil accumulation. Its natural habitat is defined by intense solar radiation and long periods of drought, which has influenced its evolutionary development toward high water-storage capacity and specialized epidermal features designed to minimize transpiration.
Botanically, the species is defined by a globular to cylindrical stem covered in prominent tubercles (mamillae). Each tubercle supports an areole from which strong, protective spines emerge. During the flowering period, the plant produces relatively large, funnel-shaped flowers, typically in shades of yellow or yellow-orange, which emerge from the apex of the stem, a diagnostic feature of the species.

The plant requires direct sunlight for the majority of the day to maintain its compact growth form and to encourage annual flowering.
