Cosmos caudatus is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known in Southeast Asia as "ulam raja" or "king's salad," this species is primarily cultivated for its edible foliage, which is consumed raw in traditional salads or served as a flavorful, nutrient-dense side dish.
Originating in Central and South America, the plant has successfully naturalized in many tropical regions, particularly throughout Malaysia and Indonesia. Its resilience and ability to thrive in varying tropical climates have made it a staple in local gardens, often grown in smallholder farms for domestic consumption and local markets.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its branching stems that can reach heights of 1.5 to 2 meters. Its leaves are distinctively bipinnate, creating a fern-like appearance. The flowers are small, pink to purplish-pink daisy-like heads. These features contribute not only to its agricultural utility but also to its aesthetic value in garden borders.
