Costus spiralis, commonly known as spiral ginger, is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Costaceae family. It is distinct from the common ginger (Zingiberaceae) primarily due to its unique habit of arranged leaves that spiral up the stem, giving the plant its characteristic architectural appearance.
The native range of this species covers tropical areas of South America, with the primary biodiversity center in Brazil. In its natural environment, the plant thrives in the understory of tropical rainforests, where it benefits from filtered sunlight, consistent humidity, and rich, acidic soils that offer excellent drainage capacity.
Botanically, the plant grows to heights of one to two meters. Its stems are robust and leafy, exhibiting a clear spiral phyllotaxy. The inflorescences are terminal spikes composed of vibrant, overlapping bracts that protect the delicate flowers, which are highly specialized for pollination by hummingbirds and specific tropical insects.
Agrotechnical requirements focus on maintaining high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. The soil must be well-drained and supplemented with organic matter to mimic the forest floor environment.
