Holy hawksbeard

Holy hawksbeard (lat. Crepis sancta) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Often categorized within the Crepis genus, this species is a notable component of Mediterranean flora. While not a primary crop in intensive commercial agriculture, it serves as an important ecological indicator and a resilient species in arid and semi-arid environments.

The plant originates from the Mediterranean region, extending across the Middle East and parts of Western Asia. Its typical habitats include rocky slopes, fallow fields, pastures, and roadsides. Because it is highly adapted to regions with short, rainy springs and long, hot, dry summers, it has developed mechanisms to complete its reproductive cycle before the peak of summer heat.

Botanically, Crepis sancta is distinguished by a basal rosette of leaves and slender stems that produce small, golden-yellow flower heads.
