The species is native to the mountain ranges of Central Asia, specifically the Tien Shan region. Botanically, the Alatau crocus is characterized by its small stature, typically reaching 8–15 centimeters in height. The corm is wrapped in thin, reticulate fibers. The leaves are narrow and grass-like, often emerging concurrently with the flowers. The blossoms are particularly noted for their contrasting exterior and interior petals: the outer tepals often display dark purple or brownish markings, while the inner ones are pristine white or cream-colored.
