Croton macrostachyus, commonly known as the broad-leaved croton, is a prominent tree species belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. It is a fast-growing deciduous tree that can reach heights of up to 25 meters. In many parts of Africa, it is considered an essential component of traditional agroforestry systems due to its ability to improve soil fertility and provide shade for companion crops.
The tree is native to the tropical regions of Africa, specifically found in highland forests and wooded grasslands. It thrives in altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 2,500 meters, requiring high annual rainfall to reach its maximum growth potential. Due to its wide ecological amplitude, it is frequently used as a pioneer species in forest restoration projects.
Botanically, it is characterized by large, alternate, heart-shaped leaves that are densely covered with stellate hairs, giving them a velvety texture. The inflorescences are long, conspicuous terminal racemes. The fruits are capsules that split into three parts, releasing small seeds rich in oil. The bark of the tree is smooth in younger specimens but becomes rough and fissured with age.
Regarding agrotechnology, the species prefers deep, fertile, and well-drained soils. Propagation is typically achieved via seeds, which should be sown in nursery beds before transplantation. Once established, the tree requires minimal maintenance, though weed control in the first two years is essential to ensure that young trees are not outcompeted for nutrients and sunlight.
