Cuphea

Cuphea is a diverse genus of herbs and shrubs belonging to the Lythraceae family. The hybrids derived from Cuphea ignea and Cuphea lanceolata are notable for their unique physiological traits and their role in both ornamental horticulture and experimental agricultural fields due to the fatty acid composition of their seeds.

The native habitat of Cuphea is primarily tropical and subtropical America, specifically regions like Mexico. As a thermophilic crop, it requires warm climates to thrive and is highly sensitive to frost. In temperate agricultural systems, it is predominantly treated as an annual crop or a container-grown plant that requires protected overwintering.

Botanically, Cuphea is characterized by its distinctive floral structure, where the calyx tube is often vividly colored and tubular, earning it nicknames like "cigar plant." The foliage is typically opposite, providing a dense, bushy appearance. The root system is relatively shallow, necessitating consistent irrigation and good soil structure for optimal nutrient absorption.

Cultivation requirements involve well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral pH level. Modern agronomic practices focus on steady irrigation, as the plant does not tolerate prolonged drought, and balanced fertilization during the active growth phase.
