The Duprez cypress (Cupressus dupreziana) is a rare and highly resilient conifer species belonging to the Cupressaceae family. Known for its extreme longevity and ability to thrive in harsh environments, this species is considered a relic of a time when the Sahara desert was significantly more humid than it is today.
The native range of this species is extremely restricted, found primarily in the Tassili n'Ajjer mountains of the central Sahara in Algeria. Outside its natural habitat, it is cultivated in select botanical collections and arboreta that focus on xerophytic plants, as it requires specific conditions to survive outside of its endemic zone.
Botanically, the tree is noted for its slow growth rate and unique morphology. Its foliage consists of small, scale-like leaves pressed tightly against the branches, which significantly reduces water loss. The wood is extremely dense and durable, an adaptation that has allowed some individual trees to live for over two millennia, making them some of the oldest living organisms on Earth.
Regarding agrotechnical requirements, Cupressus dupreziana demands well-draining, stony or sandy soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. Irrigation must be managed with extreme caution; the root system is highly susceptible to rot if water accumulates in the soil profile. The plant requires intense, direct sunlight and should never be planted in shaded areas where moisture might linger.
Economically, the species is primarily valued for its botanical rarity and its potential use in arid-land landscaping projects in Mediterranean-like climates. Common pests and diseases include fungal pathogens associated with excessive humidity and occasional infestations of spider mites in dry conditions.
