Developed at Maejo University in Thailand, this variety was bred to enhance commercial characteristics such as stem strength, flower longevity, and vibrant coloration. It has become a sought-after crop in professional floriculture due to its unique tropical appearance.
The origins of the genus lie in the monsoon regions of Southeast Asia. Consequently, the commercial production of Maejo Curcuma is most successful in warm, humid climates or controlled greenhouse environments. The plant follows a distinct seasonal cycle, where intensive vegetative growth is triggered by high temperatures and moisture, followed by a mandatory dormant phase during cooler or drier periods.
Botanically, the plant develops from fleshy, perennial rhizomes. The foliage consists of elegant, lance-shaped leaves, while the inflorescence is the main commercial product. These inflorescences are characterized by colorful, petal-like bracts that can display shades of pink, orange, or deep purple. The hybrid nature of Maejo ensures a more compact and sturdy growth habit compared to wild species.
