The plant typically features broad, lanceolate leaves and develops underground tubers that serve as the primary agricultural product.

Native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and India, the plant thrives in hot and humid climates. It is adapted to areas with monsoon rainfall patterns, where the soil remains moist during the active growth phase and becomes drier during the resting period. It is cultivated extensively in high-altitude forest clearings where it benefits from partial shade and organic matter.

Successful cultivation requires loose, well-draining, and nutrient-rich soil. The plant is sensitive to waterlogging, which often leads to rhizome rot, so raised beds or well-tilled soil are recommended. Farmers emphasize the importance of mulch to maintain soil moisture and temperature stability during the initial stages of sprouting and early growth.

This crop is primarily used in the cosmetic, perfumery, and pharmaceutical industries due to its aromatic compounds.
