Aztec dodder (Cuscuta azteca) is a highly specialized parasitic plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. It is classified in agriculture as a noxious weed rather than a crop, as it lacks chlorophyll and a functional root system, deriving all its essential nutrients and water directly from host plants.
The native range of this species is located in Central America, particularly Mexico. It thrives in tropical and subtropical climates where vegetation is dense, allowing it to easily find and attach to suitable hosts. Because of its parasitic nature, its distribution is often linked to the movement of agricultural products and seeds that may be contaminated.
Botanically, Aztec dodder appears as a tangle of thread-like, yellowish or reddish stems.
