Short-styled dodder (Cuscuta curta) is a parasitic plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. Unlike standard agricultural crops, this plant lacks chlorophyll and true roots, making it an obligate parasite that depends entirely on a host plant for survival, water, and nutrients, which it extracts through specialized structures called haustoria.

The native distribution area of Cuscuta curta is primarily located in Central Asia. In agricultural practice, this plant is not considered a crop but a major quarantine weed. It is highly invasive and capable of infesting a wide range of herbaceous plants, significantly reducing crop vigor and interfering with agricultural production processes.

The botanical structure of the species consists of thread-like stems that coil around the host. Once the haustoria penetrate the host's vascular tissues, the dodder begins to extract water and carbohydrates. This physiological drain causes the host plant to weaken, wilt, and eventually die, leading to substantial yield losses in affected fields.

Regarding ecological requirements, this species is highly adaptable to various soil types and climatic conditions. Control strategies focus on strict quarantine measures, the use of certified weed-free seed, and the application of rigorous agrotechnical methods. These include deep plowing, timely destruction of infested plants, and the use of pre-emergent or contact herbicides to manage infestations.

There is no positive agricultural use for Cuscuta curta; it is strictly managed as a detrimental pest. Farmers must be vigilant, as the seeds of this dodder can remain dormant in the soil for several years. While certain natural fungal pathogens may infect dodder, they are generally insufficient for control, and integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to protect crop health.
