The globose dodder (Cuscuta globulosa) is an obligate stem parasite belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. As a parasitic plant, it lacks chlorophyll and leaves, relying entirely on a host plant for its survival. It connects to the host's vascular system using specialized organs called haustoria, which penetrate the host's stems to extract water and nutrients.
Originally native to parts of Asia and the Middle East, Cuscuta globulosa has spread to various regions worldwide. It is frequently found in agricultural landscapes, thriving in fields of alfalfa, clover, vegetables, and fruit nurseries. Its ability to adapt to diverse climates makes it a persistent threat to global agricultural output.
Botanically, the plant consists of thread-like, yellowish or reddish stems that coil around the host plant. The flowers are distinctive, organized in dense, globose clusters that give the species its common name. The plant reproduces via seeds, which can remain dormant in the soil for many years, or through vegetative fragmentation if small parts of the stem are moved to a new host.
Management of the globose dodder is purely focused on eradication rather than cultivation. Effective control strategies involve rigorous field sanitation and the use of clean, certified seeds. Farmers are advised to practice crop rotation with non-host species and implement mechanical destruction of infected patches before the parasitic plant sets its seeds, which prevents further soil contamination.
The economic impact of this species is highly detrimental, as it classifies as a quarantine weed in many jurisdictions. By draining resources from the host, it stunts plant growth, reduces crop yields, and degrades the quality of harvested products. Furthermore, Cuscuta globulosa acts as a vector for various plant viruses, adding a secondary layer of risk to crop health and complicating management efforts.
