Lacking chlorophyll and true roots, it relies entirely on its host plants for water and nutrients, which it extracts through specialized structures called haustoria.

The species is native to North America, where it thrives in various grassland ecosystems. Due to its invasive nature, it has become a significant concern in various regions. It primarily attacks herbaceous perennials, showing a strong affinity for plants within the Asteraceae family, which often makes it a threat to diverse agricultural and wild landscapes.

Botanically, the plant consists of thin, yellowish-orange stems that wrap tightly around the host. The most distinct feature is its dense, flower-laden clusters that envelop the host stem, effectively strangling it. These clusters are responsible for both the plant's common name and its highly efficient reproductive strategy, producing numerous seeds that can remain dormant in the soil for several years.

Agricultural management requires stringent preventative protocols. Since it is a non-cultivated parasite, all agrotechnical efforts are focused on suppression. Key measures include the use of weed-free certified seeds, cleaning of agricultural machinery between fields to prevent seed dispersal, and careful monitoring of crop margins. Chemical control with selective herbicides is difficult due to the parasite's intimate physical connection with the host.
