Japanese dodder (Latin: Cuscuta japonica) is a parasitic plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. Unlike common dodder species, this specific variety is known for its thick, rope-like stems that can grow quite robustly. It is entirely dependent on host plants for survival, as it lacks chlorophyll and cannot perform photosynthesis.
Native to East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea, the Japanese dodder has become an invasive species in many other parts of the world. It thrives by spreading through seed contamination in agricultural products or by human-assisted transport, eventually establishing itself in diverse climates where it poses a significant threat to native and cultivated biodiversity.
The botanical structure of this parasite is highly specialized. It uses haustoria—root-like penetration organs—to tap into the xylem and phloem of the host plant. By extracting nutrients and water directly from the host, the dodder causes stunted growth, reduced yields, and eventually the death of shrubs, trees, and ornamental plants that it blankets with its dense, tangled vines.
Environmental requirements for the Japanese dodder are broad, as it adapts well to various sunlight conditions and humidity levels, provided a host is present. Controlling this weed is notoriously difficult because it is highly resilient. Agricultural management requires rigorous quarantine protocols, the destruction of infected vegetation via burning, and the implementation of strict field sanitation practices.
There is no agricultural use for this plant; it is considered a major international quarantine pest. Its impact on agriculture is devastating, as it can cause total crop loss and is notoriously difficult to eradicate once it settles in an area.
