It is an obligate parasite, meaning it lacks roots and leaves, having evolved to steal water, minerals, and photoassimilates from its host plants through specialized structures known as haustoria.
The species originates from the high-altitude regions of East Africa, specifically the ecosystem surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro. Its natural range is defined by the unique tropical mountain climate, where it thrives by attaching itself to native herbaceous flora and shrubs, successfully competing in diverse highland plant communities.
Botanically, Cuscuta kilimanjari consists of a thread-like, twining stem. Its growth strategy involves finding a suitable host shortly after germination.
