It lacks true roots and leaves, existing as a mass of yellow or reddish twining stems that choke the host organism.

This species is native to temperate regions of Eurasia and is widely distributed across Europe and parts of Asia. It thrives in diverse environments, ranging from river banks and floodplains to forest fringes and wild scrublands. Its natural hosts include a variety of trees and perennial herbs, but it poses a severe threat to arable crops when it spreads into farmland.
