Pedicellate dodder (Cuscuta pedicellata) is a specialized parasitic plant species belonging to the family Convolvulaceae. As an obligate parasite, it lacks chlorophyll, leaves, and true roots. Instead of photosynthesis, it relies entirely on its host for water, minerals, and carbohydrates, which it extracts using modified organs called haustoria that penetrate the host's vascular system.
The native range of this species is primarily centered in Central Asia. As an invasive weed, it has expanded its footprint through contaminated seeds and agricultural machinery. Because it does not require a specific soil type, its distribution is limited only by the presence of suitable host plants, which may include various field crops, forage grasses, and wild vegetation found in agricultural landscapes.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by slender, twining, thread-like stems that wrap tightly around the host. The epithet pedicellata refers to the distinct pedicels (stalks) that hold its small, clustered flowers. These flowers produce vast quantities of minute seeds that can survive in soil for many years, waiting for the germination signals provided by potential host plants.
Agronomic control of this weed is challenging because the parasite is biologically integrated with the host. Management strategies focus on prevention, including the use of certified weed-free seeds, strict sanitation of equipment moving between fields, and crop rotation with non-host species. Chemical control options are often limited as the parasite is protected by the host plant tissues.
Regarding its economic role, this plant is considered a serious agricultural pest and a quarantine concern worldwide. It provides no agricultural benefits and causes substantial losses:
