Description
Chinese dodder (Cuscuta sinensis) is an obligate parasitic plant belonging to the family Convolvulaceae. It is characterized by the absence of true roots and leaves and the lack of chlorophyll. To survive, the plant utilizes specialized organs called haustoria to penetrate the vascular system of the host plant and extract water, minerals, and organic nutrients.
The native range of this species is primarily East Asia, including regions across China, Japan, and parts of Korea. However, due to international trade and agricultural movement, it has expanded its reach significantly. It is considered a highly destructive weed that can infest a vast array of agricultural crops, ornamentals, and wild vegetation across different climatic zones.
Botanically, it appears as a mass of thin, twining, yellowish-orange to reddish filaments. The plant produces small, white to cream-colored flowers in clustered inflorescences. Reproduction is primarily through tiny, resilient seeds that can remain dormant in the soil for several years, making the eradication of this parasite from infested fields a long-term challenge.
The plant thrives in warm and temperate climates, especially in environments with high moisture levels which facilitate its rapid spread. Agricultural management practices are critical to preventing the dissemination of the weed. These include strictly using certified seed stocks, cleaning farm machinery between fields, and conducting early monitoring to detect and destroy infestations before they spread.
While Chinese dodder has no beneficial agricultural uses and is regarded as a severe pest, it is also a subject of study in traditional medicine in its home range. In professional agriculture, it is managed through:
