Turnip-rooted cornflower (Latin: Cyanus napulifer) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. The plant is botanically distinguished by its unique root system, which features tuberous thickenings that allow it to store nutrients and survive in challenging environments. This species was formerly included in the genus Centaurea, but modern taxonomy now places it within the Cyanus genus.
The native range of Cyanus napulifer is primarily focused in the mountainous regions of the Caucasus. It typically grows on rocky slopes and subalpine meadows, thriving in environments characterized by high sunlight exposure and significant temperature fluctuations. Its evolutionary history has made it a highly resilient species, capable of enduring periods of moderate drought and poor soil conditions.
The plant grows to a height of 30–60 cm and features distinctive blue-to-violet flower heads that are typical for the Cyanus lineage. The leaves are usually lanceolate or deeply dissected, covered with fine hairs that help reduce transpiration. Regarding cultivation, the primary requirement is excellent soil drainage. Heavy clay soils are generally unsuitable as they lead to root rot. A well-aerated, sandy, or rocky substrate with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH is ideal. In agricultural settings, it is important to mimic the plant's native ecological niche by providing high light intensity and avoiding excessive irrigation, especially during the autumn-winter transition.
