Elegant cyclamen

The elegant cyclamen (Cyclamen elegans) is a perennial tuberous herb belonging to the Primulaceae family. This species is highly valued in botanical collections for its unique morphological features and its status as a rare representative of its genus, found in specific high-altitude ecosystems.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of the Caucasus and Northern Iran. Its natural habitat consists of shaded forest slopes and rocky crevices, which dictates its preference for well-drained, humus-rich substrates and environments characterized by moderate humidity and cool air temperatures throughout the growing season.

Botanically, Cyclamen elegans is distinguished by its rounded, flattened tuber and leaves that often feature silver, marbled patterns on the upper surface. The flowers, appearing on slender scapes, display vibrant pink to purple hues, with a darker blotch at the base of the petals, which is a key diagnostic feature of the species.

Cultivation requirements involve maintaining a precise balance between moisture and drainage. The soil must be porous and neutral or slightly alkaline to ensure the tuber remains healthy. It is vital to avoid high temperatures during the summer dormancy period, as the species is sensitive to heat stress, which often results in the death of the root system.
