Description
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a perennial tropical grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is globally recognized as a significant essential oil crop, widely cultivated for its high citral content, which is used extensively in the culinary, fragrance, and pharmaceutical industries.
Native to maritime Southeast Asia, lemongrass thrives in hot, humid climates. It is currently grown as a commercial crop in various tropical regions across Asia, Africa, and South America, where the climate provides the necessary warmth and rainfall patterns essential for maximizing biomass and oil yield.
Botanically, the plant grows in dense clumps with long, slender, sharp-edged leaves.
