The plant is a tall grass with a well-developed root system and narrow linear leaves.
The plant is native to the tropical regions of Asia, primarily India and Pakistan. It is cultivated on an industrial scale in hot climates with a distinct rainy season, which is essential for active vegetative growth. The main plantations are located in Southeast Asian countries, Africa, and South America, where temperatures remain consistently high throughout the year.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by strong, erect stems that can reach heights of up to 2-3 meters. The leaves have a specific aroma reminiscent of roses, which is the origin of the common name. The inflorescences are complex panicles, and the accumulation of essential oil is most intense in the period before flowering, which determines the optimal harvest time.
