The plant originates from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. It thrives in hot, humid climates and is widely cultivated in Indonesia, China, Guatemala, and Sri Lanka. As a tropical crop, it requires year-round warm temperatures and is extremely sensitive to frost, which limits its commercial cultivation to specific latitudes.
Botanically, it forms dense, leafy clumps that can reach heights of up to 2 meters. The leaves are long, slender, and harbor specialized oil glands.
