Cynomorium coccineum is an extraordinary perennial parasitic plant belonging to the family Cynomoriaceae. Lacking chlorophyll entirely, it is incapable of photosynthesis and relies strictly on an obligate parasitic relationship with host plants, primarily shrubs found in saline, sandy soils such as Atriplex and Nitraria species.

This species is native to arid regions including the Mediterranean basin, North Africa, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula and Central Asia. It thrives in extreme environments characterized by high salinity and low precipitation. The plant is well-adapted to survive deep within the substrate, emerging above ground only during the flowering season to produce its iconic fleshy inflorescences.

Botanically, it consists of an underground rhizomatous body and a distinct, cylindrical, dark red to maroon flowering spike.
