Needle spikerush (lat. Cyperus acicularis, synonymous with Eleocharis acicularis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. In agricultural and botanical settings, it is recognized for its ability to form dense, turf-like mats in saturated soil environments, making it a specialized component of wetland vegetation.
The plant originates from the Northern Hemisphere, with a broad distribution spanning across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. It thrives in diverse climates, particularly in temperate and boreal zones where it colonizes margins of lakes, ponds, and slow-moving streams, often serving as a primary stabilizer for littoral zones.
Botanically, it is characterized by fine, hair-like stems that arise from creeping rhizomes. These stems grow in dense clusters and typically reach heights of 5–15 cm. The root system is shallow but highly effective at binding fine sediments, which is a key trait for soil stabilization in saturated or flooded agricultural landscapes.
Regarding cultivation, needle spikerush requires specific hydrological conditions. It flourishes in full sun with consistent water availability. Optimal soil types are silty or clay-heavy soils that remain moist throughout the growing season. Management practices primarily involve monitoring water levels and preventing competition from more aggressive aquatic invasive weeds.
The agricultural and environmental use of the plant includes land reclamation, erosion control along irrigation channels, and the remediation of wetlands. While generally resilient, the plant can be susceptible to specific fungal pathogens that thrive in stagnant water. Proper site management, including water circulation, is essential to minimize disease outbreaks and maintain plant vigor.
