Globe flatsedge (lat. Cyperus echinatus) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. Within agricultural systems, this plant is primarily recognized as a persistent and aggressive weed that poses significant challenges to crop management due to its efficient reproductive strategies and rapid colonization capabilities.

The native range of Cyperus echinatus is predominantly in North America, where it has adapted to a variety of habitats. It thrives in open fields, pastures, and disturbed lands. Its ability to compete effectively with cultivated crops for light, water, and soil nutrients makes it a subject of concern for farmers working in warmer, temperate regions.

Botanically, the species is identified by its distinctive globose, spike-like inflorescences that resemble a hedgehog, which serves as a key diagnostic feature. The plant typically features triangular stems reaching heights of up to 60 cm. Its underground anatomy includes tubers and rhizomes, which allow the plant to store energy and propagate vegetatively throughout the growing season.

The plant demonstrates a preference for well-drained sandy or loamy soils and requires high light intensity to reach full maturity. Its agricultural management is complicated by the fact that improper mechanical tillage can lead to the fragmentation of tubers, unintentionally promoting further growth and increasing the density of the infestation across the field.

While the plant serves no major commercial purpose in standard agriculture, it is known to host several pathogenic fungi and specific insects that can migrate to neighboring commercial crops. Effective control usually involves a combination of chemical suppression using selective herbicides, strategic crop rotation, and physical soil management that targets the exhaustion of the tuber bank.
