Elegant flatsedge (lat. Cyperus elegans) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is a specialized moisture-loving crop that thrives in aquatic or semi-aquatic environments. Within the agricultural sector, it is valued primarily for its ecological resilience and its ability to stabilize saturated substrates that are unsuitable for conventional row crops.

The species originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including the Caribbean and Mexico. Its natural habitat includes coastal marshes, wetlands, and the borders of stagnant water bodies. This evolutionary history dictates its biological preference for constant moisture and high nutrient availability in hydromorphic soils.

Botanically, the plant features erect, triangular stems that grow from an underground rhizomatous system. The leaves are typically basal, narrow, and grass-like, while the inflorescences are arranged in terminal clusters resembling umbrellas. These distinctive features make it a visually appealing species for specific landscaping and restoration projects.

Cultivation requirements involve maintaining a high water table and providing adequate sunlight. It performs best in nutrient-rich, organic, or alluvial soils. The agronomic management should focus on monitoring the moisture levels throughout the growing season, as the plant lacks drought tolerance. Soil pH should ideally be neutral or slightly acidic to ensure optimal nutrient uptake.

The plant is mainly utilized in environmental restoration as a bio-filter and in horticulture for water-feature planting. It serves as a soil binder, preventing erosion along banks and ditch slopes.
