Redroot flatsedge (Cyperus erythrorhizos) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the sedge family, Cyperaceae. Within an agricultural framework, it is recognized as a persistent species in wetlands and irrigated fields, often characterized by its rapid growth cycle and adaptation to saturated environments.
The species is native to North America, occupying a wide range of habitats across the continent. It is commonly found in riparian zones, floodplains, and artificial agricultural wetlands such as rice paddies. Its distribution is closely tied to water availability, as it thrives in muddy substrates that remain moist throughout the growing season.
Botanically, Cyperus erythrorhizos is distinguished by the reddish pigmentation at the base of its culms, which helps distinguish it from other members of the Cyperus genus. Successful growth depends on the availability of nitrogen-rich deposits and constant hydration, which are typical features of rice-growing regions.
While the plant is rarely cultivated intentionally, it is managed as a weed when it competes with primary crops. Its impact is mitigated through several agronomic strategies:
