Slender sedge (lat. Cyperus tenuis) is a perennial herbaceous species belonging to the Cyperaceae family. Within agricultural systems, this plant is recognized for its ability to thrive in water-saturated environments, making it a functional component in wetland ecosystems and grazing areas. Its biological structure allows it to maintain productivity in conditions that are unsuitable for many traditional forage grasses.

Originating primarily from South American regions, Cyperus tenuis is widely adapted to tropical and subtropical climates. Its natural range includes damp meadows, riverbanks, and marshy lowlands where seasonal water level fluctuations are common. The plant has evolved to be highly resilient, successfully competing with other vegetation in nutrient-rich, wet soil conditions.

Botanically, this species is characterized by its thin, delicate culms and narrow, linear leaves arranged at the base of the stem. The inflorescence is a distinct umbel-like structure, typical of the Cyperus genus, which facilitates efficient pollination and seed dispersal. The root system is fibrous and often includes rhizomes, providing the plant with robust regenerative capabilities.

Regarding cultivation requirements, the plant demands high moisture availability and sufficient light exposure. It thrives in soils that are rich in organic matter and possess a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Proper soil moisture management is essential; although it tolerates inundation, well-drained but wet soil provides the most favorable conditions for achieving maximum biomass yields.

The primary economic use of slender sedge is as a component of sustainable grazing land management, providing roughage for livestock in challenging wetland conditions. Pest management focuses on controlling occasional infestations of leaf-eating insects and managing fungal pathogens during stagnant water periods. Periodic monitoring and regulated grazing practices are recommended to maintain a healthy and productive stand.
