Cypress spurge (Euphorbia cyparissias L.) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. While it is often classified as an invasive weed in agricultural landscapes, it is also valued for its distinctive foliage and hardiness in xeriscaping and sustainable garden designs.

The species is native to Europe and has naturalized across much of the temperate world. It thrives in open, dry habitats such as fields, meadows, and pastures. Its geographical distribution includes vast areas of Eurasia and North America, where it is often found colonizing neglected agricultural lands and roadsides.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its linear, needle-like leaves that resemble those of cypress trees, which gives it its common name. It produces a deep, spreading rhizome system that allows for rapid colony formation. The plant typically reaches a height of 20 to 40 centimeters and produces yellowish-green floral bracts in late spring and early summer.

Regarding cultivation requirements, Cypress spurge is exceptionally undemanding. It prefers well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils and thrives in full sun. It exhibits high tolerance to drought and poor soil fertility, making it a hardy survivor in environments where other crops might fail. However, these same traits make it a persistent weed that is difficult to eradicate from cultivated fields.
