The Formosan lady's slipper (Cypripedium formosanum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is widely regarded as one of the most decorative hardy orchids suitable for cultivation in temperate climates, provided that specific requirements for shade and soil moisture are strictly met.
The species originates from the mountainous regions of Taiwan, where it thrives in damp, cool forest environments. Due to its natural habitat, the plant is adapted to regions with distinct seasons, making it a challenging but rewarding subject for specialized gardeners and collectors who can provide the necessary environmental conditions.
Botanically, the plant is defined by two large, distinctively pleated, fan-like leaves that appear at the top of the stem. The root system consists of thin, creeping rhizomes that require careful handling.
